Vic Civil was the primary contractor for both the structural strengthening and environmental remediation works for an old mechanics building in Kew, which is being developed into apartments. As the site itself is heritage listed the entire external wall extent needed to be protected. This led to about 50 lineal meters of underpinning required to be completed to remove buried fuel and oil tanks littered around the site. Once the underpinning was completed each one of the 7 tanks could be removed some requiring excavations of around 3 meters deep. Most of the soil removed from these excavations was classified as Category B contaminated soil which was farmed on site. With guidance from DRC Environmental Vic Civil was able to turn the Category B soil into Category C which was a big benefit for the client saving on disposal costs.
